Turkey, which hosts the COP31 climate summit in November, says the climate footprint of artificial intelligence will be a priority. It is developing a voluntary pledge on AI and climate goals with UN agencies, and plans to showcase pilot projects that use AI responsibly.

The Green Party leader wants a freeze on approving new data centres in England because of their water and energy use, with tougher environmental rules and more say for local communities. The government says a pause would cost jobs and investment and harm national security, while the data centre industry says its sites use less water than golf courses and leisure centres.

A study by Allianz Trade estimates that data centres emitted 286 million tonnes of carbon dioxide in 2025, about 57% more than the International Energy Agency's estimates, with AI's growing electricity use a major driver. It warns that emissions could more than double by 2030 unless power grids are cleaned up, and says nearly 70% of them are in the US and China.
